Puppies and Beyond 12 Weeks to 12 Months:
Eligibility: Puppies/Adolescents 12 weeks to 12 months (for dogs outside of this range, younger or older at start date, please contact Marian for eligibility questions). Young puppies must have had at least a veterinary health check plus 1st set of shots; older puppies have 2nd set and or/completion of vaccine regime. All dogs should exhibit good health before coming to each class.
Each week we'll discuss matters pertaining to young dogs: feeding, eating habits, housebreaking, crate/confinement, bite inhibition, exercise, play, destruction, etc. Training skills will involve human and canine socialization, the foundational skills of sit, down, stays, proper leash walking, recall, leave-it, off, hand signals, all at your dog's developmental level. Equipment every week: Mat (crate-size to fit your puppy's body size), 6-foot leash, flat/snug fitting collar, treat pouch loaded with yummy meaty/cheesy treats (PLENTY), favorite tug toy/ball, water/bowl (no bowl sharing). Optional equipment: crate, xpen, potty pads, chain martingale collar. DO NOT FEED DINNER BEFORE CLASS.

Beginning (Basic Dog Training): Open to all dogs over the age of 12 months and adult dogs with little or no prior training (this is next step post Puppy Kindergarten). Contact Marian with any questions regarding age, temperament, eligibility for any offered level. Skills you'll learn with your dog: Loose-lead walking, heeling, sit, down, stay, come, off, leave-it, wait, hand signals, human and dog socialization. Equipment: 6-foot leash (no flexis), treats your dog LOVES, treat pouch. If you've been solely using a harness, your dog must come with leash attached to a snug fitting flat collar (buckle or snap).Harnesses are not an adequate obedience skill training tool; you will learn proper handling/teaching skills.
Equipment: 6-foot leash, long line and/or flexi, snug fitting collar, any training collar/head halter in use, resting crate mat/rug, treats your LOVES, treat pouch.

CANINE LIFE SKILLS for Intermediate to Advanced Dogs—NOTE—if you’re interested in earning any CGC Certificate or Trick Dog Title, email Marian when you register.
Questions: 1. Does Fido readily check out? 2. Does Fido ignore your recall command? 3. Is Rover more interested in other dogs than in you? 4. Does Rover have decent foundation skills but now you recognize the need for more brain stimulation? 5. Is Fifi bored, perhaps reactive on leash, indifferent to listening? 6. Does your idea of engagement with Fifi involve puzzle devices packed with treats? 7. Do you think Maverick knows a thing or two yet you struggle to get follow through on any given command?
If the answer to any of these questions is YES, then come to Canine Life Skills!
Open to all dogs which have completed Beginning or beyond, such as higher Intermediate to Advanced levels (Canine Good Citizen, Tricks, Canine Life Skills classes). This class advances and refines foundational obedience skills. Every week we work on: reliable recalls, on & off leash heeling, reliable stays, go to place, attention. Solid foundational skills are a must. CGC and Trick Dog skills/tricks will also be interwoven in class. Performance dogs in training welcome!
Equipment: 6-foot leash, flat collar, any training collar in use, long training line and/or flexi/retractable, resting mat/rug, LOTS of treats your dog LOVES (meaty/cheesy/high value—NOT hard crunchy), tug toy/ball, bait bag.

Class Description: In this class we introduce students to the next level of the exciting new sport/activity of Nose Work. We will focus on teaching the dogs to search for a specific "target odor." The first target odor will be the essential oil of "birch", and we will achieve this by pairing odor with treats (or toys) in and out of boxes. We will be expanding the dog's hunting skills, along with the handlers learning to recognize the "change of behavioral" in the dogs as they search for the source of the odor.
Prerequisite: Dogs must have taken Introduction to Nose Work or alternate prerequisites can be considered at the discretion the instructor.
Eligibility and Requirements:

Class Description: What is K9 Nose Work?
"Inspired by working detection dogs, K9 Nose Work is the fun search and scenting activity for virtually all dogs and people. This easy to learn activity and sport builds confidence and focus in many dogs, and provides a safe way to keep dogs fit and healthy through mental and physical exercise." K9 Nose Work ®
We will teach the dog how to play the game. The most important goal for this class is to have fun! Nose Work allows dogs to be dogs to and to building their natural hunting skills using their love of food treats (or toys). Each week we will add more challenging puzzles which in turn builds confidence as well as enhances communication between dog and handler.
